Extreme Police Response to Prisoner Exercise of Free Speech

According to Travis County Sheriff’s Deputies, this inmate was exercising his first amendment right to say nasty things over the phone, and failed to cease when so ordered by the police. Do inmates lose their first amendment rights just by being sentenced to prison?

Four Deputies Shove his Face into the Floor

Four deputies took him down, shoving his face into the floor. When they let him up, he spit. One of the deputies claimed he was trying to spit on him. But, hey, if you shove my face into the floor I might spit, too. I don’t want the stuff on the bottom of your shoes in my mouth. That’s no more out of place than him dusting himself off.

Made in Gitmo: Head Bags

They not only handcuffed him and placed him in a cell, they also felt it necessary to bind him to some kind of chair and place a kinder, gentler Gitmo bag over his head. It’s not heavy black canvas and it’s vented at the top, but it still a Gitmo bag to me.

Is this “Demolition Man” Already?

A four-man takedown, shackling to a chair, sent to a cell and a Gitmo bag all for saying non-approved words? Have we reached a Demolition Man future already? Based on the available information, I can only conclude that this is another police overreaction. How soon until we see Gitmo bags become as common as handcuffs in the repertoire of police state weapons?
